A Level Art Trip to Queen's Gallery on Friday 4th October
On Friday 4th October the Art and Design A level students managed to completely bypass not only rain in Green Park, but also an enormous queue of people who were resigned to wait to catch a glimpse of the brilliant drawings of Leonardo Da Vinci exhibited at the Queen's Gallery which is adjacent to Buckingham Palace.
The students were warmly greeted like VIPs (which of course they are) by Will Graham the Learning Director, and ushered through security - which vaguely resembled the auspicious beginnings of an Easyjet holiday.
The students were immediately in awe of the interior architecture and the "serpentine marble pillars with gold accents" and led up to a beautiful skylit art room. The students were introduced to a fantastic teacher and freelance artist Emma Finch who gave each student a large easel, lots of art resources and clear instruction regarding the proportions of the male model (who clearly resembled a Da Vinci model) and how to approach scale and technique. The students all produced strong and bold figure drawings which will certainly complement their portfolios.
After a two hour session the students felt exhausted but were enlivened by seeing the amazing work of Da Vinci. One student said that the exhibition was spectacular as there were so many drawings that she hadn't seen before and in particular the preparatory sketches for 'The Last Supper'. A valuable and thoroughly inspiring educational trip.
With thanks to the Queen's Gallery team, the students for their wonderful maturity, the sixth form and Art team and the parents for allowing them to go. Apologies to one Year 13 students because as we were leaving he said 'But Miss, I haven't seen everything yet!'
