GCSE success at Harris Academy St John’s Wood with great results across the board and half of students achieving the demanding Ebacc

Students at Harris Academy St John’s Wood are today celebrating their GCSE results with a strong performance across the board.

63% of students achieved a strong pass (grade 5) or above in both English and maths, far higher than the 2019 national rate of 43%. Half of students achieved at least a Grade 4 in their Ebacc subjects with nearly 40% doing so at Grade 5.

Amongst those celebrating were Hari De Palmer and Selina Chen who each achieved a ‘super’ Grade 9 in eleven subjects. Very few students across the country will achieve this number of Grade 9s, which are the equivalent of an A**.

Hari said:

“The hard work paid off and I am so happy, thank you to all my teachers for all their support over the years”.

Samantha Green, Principal of the Academy said:

“I’d like to congratulate all our students celebrating today. There are some magnificent individual performances as well as excellent overall figures.”

“We look forward to welcoming these students back to Harris St John’s Wood in September to begin their Sixth Form studies and to replicate the excellent A Level performances we enjoyed last week”.

Harris Academy St John’s Wood has received an £80,000 award to become a Science Learning Partnership, making it a centre of excellence for STEM learning in the capital.

STEM Learning is a government-funded body that organises Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for science, maths and computing teachers.

The school will now be responsible for the planning and delivery of training sessions for schools in Central & West London – the boroughs of Brent, Camden, Ealing, Hammersmith and Fulham, Harrow, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, Richmond Upon Thames and Westminster.

To mark the award, Harris St John’s Wood is holding a launch event after school on Monday 5th July viewable here.

The evening’s guest speakers include: Samantha Green, the school’s Executive Principal, Dr Sam Sims, Lecturer at UCL, and Theo Spalding-McIntosh, Head of Biology at School21.

Harris St John’s Wood is one of the highest-performing schools in a high-performing borough and well-positioned to lead on raising standards across the region. It also has strong specialist subject and logistical support from other schools, teachers and consultants within the Harris Federation, the highest performing large multi-academy trust in the UK.

Ms Green said: “We see this as an opportunity to become a real centre of excellence for STEM. It is about more than just science – we will also deliver training on computing, maths and technology. We look forward to offering a rich and rigorous programme to teachers and technicians across Central and West London.”

The school’s STEM sessions begin in September 2021 and will be a mix of face-to-face and remote sessions plus network meetings.

On Friday the 17th of January 2020, 7 students from Year 9, including myself, went towards City Hall, where the Apprentice is filmed. We went to a Social Intergration Youth Summit and took part in workshops ran by a social intergration action charity called WE. Many schools gathered together to share ideas of how we could change the world. The day was about bonding with new people and socialising with people you don't know. We did many activities which lead up to our speeches about how we can help to change our community. Our speech was about Children with disabilities and how we could help our local SEN school students in Swiss Cottage to have an enjoyable day at our school. Sadly, we did not get to present our ideas, but we came up with a good one! Overall, we had a great and memorable day, and we put a lot of effort into our presentation, not to forget the help of Mr.Osenie and Ms.Martins who helped us immensely, and also taking us to the venue and back. We all enjoyed interacting with other students from different schools and increase our knowledge about today's problems. This is an experience we will never forget!

On Monday 20th January a group of 8 boys and 8 girls across Years 8, 9 and 10 represented the school at a Cricket tournament at Lords Cricket ground against other Westminster schools. The students all represented themselves with a high level of maturity throughout the day especially when given the opportunity to develop their leadership skills with a workshop designed to do so when they weren’t playing. Now onto the Cricket, the girls did extremely well to come back from a couple of early losses to reach the final where they were unfortunate to lose to a well drilled team. The standout performer for the girls was Haleemah whose performance in the playoff to reach the final was the difference between the two teams with Haleemah at one point almost completing a hat-trick of wickets in her final over! The boys were unfortunate and lost their first two games by very close margins losing wickets at crucial times. They did show great character to then win their last game by a big margin and didn’t let the disappointment from earlier in the day get to them. The standout performer for the boys was Sanketha who displayed some great batting ability hitting some big 6’s and who bowled with good pace and accuracy!

On Friday 17th January 80 sixth formers from HASJW were fortunate to meet Tara Leathers from the Princes Trust who also introduced and interviewed a young man called Kenan, originally from Hungary, who told the students about his disappointing experiences in education but how the charity supported him in realizing his dream to work in Physiotherapy. Their personal introductions and subsequent Q & A about their experiences of help and support from the Princes Trust were fascinating and enlightening to our students. They thought the talk was entirely 'relevant' and although some were ridiculously camera shy it was so nice of them to continue chatting to individual students at the end. So appreciated. A great antidote to exams!

We were more than happy to support Elmo by watching him deliver his 'brilliant presentation on Canaletto's painting 'Bacino di San Marco from San Giorgio Maggiore' on Monday 13th January. Eliza Bonham Carter, the Head of Royal Academy Schools and adjudicator of the ARTiculation Prize heat in Burlington House praised Elmo for taking us on a journey of revelation, and into the details of the history of the painting. She applauded Elmo for drawing us into the structure and the detail of the painting and for connecting the past and the present in a way that was exciting.

The standard was incredibly high , with representatives from nine other schools including Harris Girls' Academy East Dulwich, Francis Holland, Putney High School and Queen's Gate School. Year 12 students came to support and learnt a great deal about passionate and insightful critical analysis as well as significant moments in the history of art.

Harris Academy St. John’s Wood judged ‘Good’ by Ofsted

Harris Academy St. John’s Wood judged ‘Good’ by Ofsted

Harris Academy St. John’s Wood has been judged ‘Good’ by Ofsted in its first inspection since it joined the Harris Federation.

The report showcases a significant transformation at the school which, on its last inspection as Quintin Kynaston, was placed in ‘special measures’.

Of the five areas judged by Ofsted, two were found to be ‘Outstanding’ already – the behaviour and attitudes of the academy’s students, and the Sixth Form.

As well as praising the ‘well-crafted curriculum’ on offer at the academy, the report notes the exceptional education and support provided to all students.

Highlights include:

On behaviour, described by inspectors as “impeccable”:

“Pupils know that standards of behaviour are given high priority in this school. Leaders expect nothing less than excellent and that is what they get.”

	On academic success:

“Whatever their background, pupils go on to achieve very well in GCSE examinations and in a wide range of courses in the sixth form.”
		“Disadvantaged students achieve very well.”
“Almost all students go on to higher education, many to top universities, including disadvantaged students.”

On parents: “The partnership with parents is strong and they are highly supportive of the school.”

Inspectors noted just one area that needs to be addressed to make the academy an ‘Oustanding’ school. This is to ensure that Year 9 pupils continue the full range of subjects they studies in Years 7 and 8, rather than focusing on their GCSE choices. As Ofsted notes, the academy is already working towards this.

Mr Graeme Smith, Principal of Harris Academy St. John’s Wood, said:

“Our report showcases the progress that has been made over the past three years to transform our school into the happy and successful place of learning it is today. I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the outcome of this report and we will continue to work tirelessly on our journey towards ‘Oustanding’.”

Mr Nick Soar, Executive Principal of Harris Academy St. John’s Wood, added:

“I would like to thank and congratulate students, staff, parents and governors for their fantastic efforts in making this school thrive. The report mirrors the huge improvements in our results since opening, with the academy now in the top 10% of schools for GCSEs and the top 25 school in the country for student progress at A Level.”

Mr Rob Hewitt, Chair of Governors at Harris Academy St. John’s Wood, said:

“The result of the recent Ofsted inspection is testament to the transformation of the school over the last two and a half years into an institution that combines excellent results with the highest standards of behaviour. This reflects the tireless work of the staff, well supported by the Harris Federation and the governors, in creating an environment where children of all backgrounds and abilities can flourish.”

Our students added:

Hari in Year 9: “Reading this report makes me confident going into my GCSE years and fills me with hope for the things the school can achieve and give to students. It makes me proud of the improvements the school has made and glad to be a part of the school community.”
Sixth former Shilan: “As a member of the Sixth Form, I’m very proud of the report. I have been at the school since Year 7 and we have come a long way as a school and as a team.”

Sixth form students at Harris Academy St John’s Wood gave Westminster North parliamentary candidates a grilling as they campaigned for December’s general election.

As part of the Academy’s broad and enriching curriculum, over 300 students voluntarily attended this vibrant event. They were joined by:

	Karen Buck – Labour
Gabriela Palacios – Christian People’s Alliance
	George Lee – Liberal Democrats
	Jamie Macfarlane – Conservative
	Cyrus Parvin – Brexit Party

Students asked a range of questions about matters close to their heart, including knife crime, the NHS, Brexit, votes at 16 and tuition fees. The candidates also shared individual stump speeches. The debate was lively, engaging and enjoyed by all those that attended. Candidates promoted their own positions as well as challenging those of their competitors. Some students stayed behind to discuss further issues with the candidates.

Graeme Smith, Principal commented “our students really enjoyed the chance to hear from our local candidates and give their own views. Several of our young people are now able to vote and we hope this event gave them the opportunity to reflect on and form their own opinions, as well as encouraging those who are not yet able to vote to think about how they might engage. At a time when young people sometimes have a reputation for cynicism, this event was heartening.”

Liz English, Head of Sixth form also noted “we have a rich programme for our sixth form students. This event is an example of the many activities we have outside our core curriculum to develop our students as citizens. I am proud of the excellent contribution they made to the debate.”

Thanks go the all the candidates for their time, as well as Assistant Principal, Mr Snell for his skills as compere.

Attached is a photo of the candidates, with the sixth form leadership team, Miss English (Head of Sixth Form), Mr Snell (Assistant Principal), Mr Soar (Executive Principal).

Mali described the stunning portrait of an ambitious Philippe Le Roy by Anthony Van Dyck and then later described the poignant life and career of the poet and actress Mary Robinson in front of her beautiful portrait by Thomas Gainsborough. Robinson was an independent and resourceful woman who was resilient despite adversity. Mali completed her presentation by analysing the intricate, ancient and mysterious bell of St. Mura (c.1000-1599 AD)- probably the most ancient artefact in the collection. In addition to members of the public; family, staff and fellow Year 11 students came to support which ensured a sizeable audience. Mali was able to create an afternoon to remember.
Earlier today, ten of our boys from years 7 and 8 made the short journey to the prestigious Lords Cricket Ground to contest the Westminster Indoor Cricket Finals. The boys have been working very hard this year under the guidance of Mr Ramsey and they were deservedly excited about the tournament. The team faced numerous local schools and throughout the day some fine batting and fielding skills were on display. Major highlights of the day included a terrific 26-run victory over King Solomon school with some excellent boundaries being made by Egor and Aon. The boys were a massive credit to the school, their energy and enthusiasm was perfectly balanced with superb sportsmanship from every student – they were truly great ambassadors to the school. Overall, stand-out players were Rafi for his consistently excellent batting, Rehan for his dynamic fielding skills and possibly the greatest effort of all going to Abdullah for his leadership in the role of team captain. Well done to all involved.

Harris Experience – 2019/2020

Last Wednesday, a group of high-achieving Year 9 students went to Crystal Palace for their introduction to the Harris Experience programme. The students were exceptionally attentive when listening to presentations delivered by the Head of the Programme, coordinators and A-Level students who are previous participants in the Harris Experience.

At the end of the evening, the students collected their badges and pinned them onto their blazers, marking their start to the programme.

They now look forward to their first trip, to Christie’s Auction House, which will be in November.

ST13 Program offered through the Harris Experience. Participants: Taam, Amelia, Oliver and Mali

The ST13 program is a specialized course aimed at year 10 high attaining students as they move into year 11, helping them to expand their knowledge on subjects they have had a previous interest in, to develop their understanding of topics both for their personal interest and to strengthen their A-level applications. So far, we have had two days at King’s College in London Bridge, focusing on three different subjects which we were able to choose. I chose Science, Philosophy and Art History, though other subjects included Mathematics and Humanities. In Science we learnt about the function of the heart, disorders of the heart and treatments of heart disorders, which was deeply fascinating. Philosophy was all about discussing certain questions in a group, such as “Do people only do things for pleasure?” This allowed us to conclude that yes, they do (though this is obviously debatable). Art History was also fascinating; not only did we see the evolution of style in art, but we discussed ethics and morals, especially concerning the narrow diversity of artists before 1900. I most enjoyed the Science lessons, because my favorite subject is Biology. It was an A-level style lesson and I feel very prepared for the idea of sixth form, because I now have an idea of the difficulty of the lessons and how they are structured. This course has made me increasingly determined in my resolve to do well in my GCSE’s, and as a result I’m very much looking forward to my A-level experience.

Mali

In the ST13 Program, I found the Philosophy sessions the most inspiring as they showed me how interesting Philosophy can be. This program will assist me by giving me readings on Philosophy, so that I may prepare myself for A-Level and deepen my knowledge of the subject. This has not made me consider my further academic goals, but rather reinforced them, and inspired me to continue to study hard.

Taam

The Sutton Trust Programme is designed to challenge us to do independent learning, to give us an edge for when we start applying for top universities in year 13. It began with a summer school on the 24th and the 25th of June at King’s College London (Guy’s Campus). We chose a core subject that our course would be based upon. Over the 2-day trip we took classes linked to the subject we chose and attended seminars. I had a course on Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs), which consisted of end-to-end encryption, mix networks, encryption storage, and cryptocurrencies. As interesting as the classes were, I found the seminar on Philosophy very though-provoking. Discussing questions, trying to look at them from different perspectives, and debating about responses to those questions was very enjoyable and fascinating. The classes made me evaluate both efficiency and the ethics of using privacy enhancing technologies, and debate between privacy and security, as well as understanding how they are relevant to our lives. Coding is something that I would more associate with computing, which is not one of my strong suits. However, STEM subjects are an option for me that have always been on the table.

Amelia

I was a part of the ST13 program, as a part of the Harris Experience. The program consisted of two days at King’s College London, taking part in several advanced master classes focussing on subjects that wouldn’t necessarily be covered in my normal education. One of these was an advanced mathematics course, in which we saw its application in PET’s (Privacy Enhancing Technologies) and in modern E-Currencies, such as Bitcoin. It was interesting to see such advanced mathematics (a subject I am quite passionate about and enjoy) in everyday life, especially due to its surprising appearances in quite mundane parts of our lives like text messaging. The program also consists of a year-long reading list in subjects of my choosing which will look to benefit me greatly during not only my GCSE’s, but also through my A-Levels and university courses. The whole program was quite influential to my thought processes regarding my A-Level options, which have changed since I began the program. I also got to see a variety of the facilities at King’s College, which has caused me to consider it for one of the universities I’d be interested in going to after I've finished my A-Levels. I think the program is great for anyone who wants to expand their knowledge within a considerably niche field of learning.

UNIVERSIFY SUMMER RESIDENTIAL attended by Stephen, Mali and Taam

Universify is a multi-year course which includes two residentials at Oxford University, monthly coaching sessions and lots of support. So far, I have been on the first residential at Jesus College, Oxford, which took place during the summer holidays. We had daily lessons, coaching sessions, evening activities and lectures. These were all entirely captivating, including a neuroscience lesson, robotics lesson and a film history lecture. In the evenings, the activities we participated in were varied, including a cinema trip, punting and a ghost tour. The experience was like nothing else I had done before, and was extremely useful, since I gained lots of key knowledge concerning the requirements of Oxbridge, which I believe will help me in choosing my A-levels and consequently my future university. The most inspiring thing about the course was that it was aimed towards teens of less privileged backgrounds, showing that you don’t need to have had the most expensive education to obtain a place at Oxbridge or Russell Group universities. I believe that this course has helped me greatly in both encouraging me in my academic work and inspiring me to apply for the best universities, because it’s not unachievable. Universify has also helped me to widen my aspirations concerning A-level and university courses; I had previously had my mind set on medicine, though now I’m less fearful of thinking of less vocational courses. This course has undoubtedly been very valuable, and I very much recommend it to anyone who would like to apply.

Mali

In Oxford the most inspiring thing for me was talking to all the different volunteers about their university experiences, and the amazing stories that they shared further solidified my aspiration to attend university. This program will assist me as I was assigned a personal Universify coach to mentor me through my GCSEs.

Taam

The Universify program is a program that shows students the day to day lifestyle of a college/university student. The summer residential was held at Jesus College, Oxford, where we essentially lived for a week which meant we had to be independent as there was no one pushing you to be where you needed to be on time. We were exposed to several courses such as Politics, Game Theory, Film History, History, Mathematics, Business & Entrepreneurship, Philosophy, Biology, Robotics & A.I. and group work. We also participated in sports and activities such as rugby, punting, cinema, eating lots of ice cream, a ghost tour and visiting Blackwells Bookstore to name a few.
We ate three times a day in the hall/diner and were expected to be punctual and responsible if we wanted to keep our privileges. I found the volunteers the most inspiring as they were only a few years older than us and easy to talk/relate to. They all studied different things and shared different past experiences that were just inspiring to listen to. Before going on this trip, I was very unsure of what path I wanted to take but it has really helped in just getting an idea of what is out there. I definitely think that I am going to university, but this has given me an opportunity to focus more on what I would like to do and the path I need to take to reach my goal.

PARTICLE PHYSICS RESIDENTIAL COURSE – ST. PAUL’S SCHOOL attended by Shah, Taam and Mali

This course took place at St Paul's School in Hammersmith and was structured with lectures and workshops about Particle Physics. We focused on the development of human knowledge regarding Particle Physics and its uses. We analysed real data collected at CERN, before we had a Skype convocation with the control room at the Large Hadron Collider, Geneva. We met other likeminded future scientists among the teens and made friends who we will me meeting up with later this month. The sheer amount of knowledge that was made accessible to us during these lectures and workshops was amazing. Every single lesson, we were given new knowledge which allowed us to make connections to other aspects of science, which was wonderful. The most inspiring aspect of this course for me was probably the professors, and their incredible intellectual abilities. I am now able to put this on my CV, which will help my applications to Sixth Form Colleges and university. It has also helped me in my GCSE’s, because I now have a more detailed understanding of the topics we are learning, meaning that I will be able to apply my knowledge and understand the content, instead of simply memorising content to score marks. I recommend this course to anyone who wants to apply to it, because it is very useful and enjoyable.

Mali

In St Paul’s I found that the most inspiring thing was the interview with CERN, as I got an insight into what Particle Physicists really do. This program has assisted me by giving me more knowledge in a field that I am very interested in, and also introducing me to new peers of my own ability and age that I can confer with about my studies.

Taam

I attended the Particle Physics Summer School and enjoyed the experience there as I found the lectures fascinating as well as the tasks we were set. What inspired me the most about the Particle Physics Summer School was the masterclasses where we were able to analyse real data from particle accelerators to identify which particles we could see. I have learnt a lot of information about Particle Physics such as particle accelerators and their functions, the Higgs Boson and neutrinos. I believe that the knowledge I have gained will be useful as I want to study A-level Physics and hopefully when I come back to this area of study it will all be familiar. Dr Ben Still was a very interesting person to be tutored by because one of the things he lectured us about was the theory of the ‘big bang’ and he used a creative analogy in lego to give us a better understanding.

MAGIC OF MATERIALS RESIDENTIAL COURSE – ST. PAUL’S SCHOOL attended by Amelia and Yunus

The Magic of Materials Summer School was a free 3 day residential from the 8th to the 10th of July that was run in partnership with St Paul’s School and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3). The course focussed on Materials Science, a subject spanning Physics, Chemistry and Engineering. We stayed at the school’s on-site boarding houses and over the course of the day we attended talks, lectures, question and answer sessions, and hands on experiments. Some of the practicals that I enjoyed the most were scanning electron microscopy, metals-annealing and hardening, ceramics and glasses practical, and polymers practical, all of which I have never done and may probably never do in school. The evenings were more informal, where we all participated in fun challenges which explored the use of materials and the application of different designs of structures. Not only were the activities incredibly fun, incorporating things that I have never done before, but the residential also provided me with new friendships. For someone who is initially quite shy, that was something special. The entire experience was fantastic, and I think it all comes down to the people that made up the experience: the other students and the course organisers like Dr Ben Still and Dr Diane Aston. I sincerely feel that it was the best trip I have been on in years. The practicals have given me an insight into the nature of some materials and technologies that I wouldn’t really have known about otherwise from a hands-on experience. This residential gave me that opportunity because St Paul’s has more advanced equipment. I was already quite invested in subjects like Physics and Engineering but attending this summer school has given me a new and interesting outlook on Materials Science and Physics, and it has made me more excited to learn more about it in the future. Furthermore, I think I have learnt a lot about materials and how they are used in our day to day life, and I hope to carry on with this as an option for my A Levels. I am still not one hundred percent sure about what exactly I am going to do but I think it is also important that I got a taste of what it is like to live with other people, away from home and in a school environment, which I think will better prepare me for later life.

On Friday 4th October the Art and Design A level students managed to completely bypass not only rain in Green Park, but also an enormous queue of people who were resigned to wait to catch a glimpse of the brilliant drawings of Leonardo Da Vinci exhibited at the Queen's Gallery which is adjacent to Buckingham Palace.

The students were warmly greeted like VIPs (which of course they are) by Will Graham the Learning Director, and ushered through security - which vaguely resembled the auspicious beginnings of an Easyjet holiday.

The students were immediately in awe of the interior architecture and the "serpentine marble pillars with gold accents" and led up to a beautiful skylit art room. The students were introduced to a fantastic teacher and freelance artist Emma Finch who gave each student a large easel, lots of art resources and clear instruction regarding the proportions of the male model (who clearly resembled a Da Vinci model) and how to approach scale and technique. The students all produced strong and bold figure drawings which will certainly complement their portfolios.

After a two hour session the students felt exhausted but were enlivened by seeing the amazing work of Da Vinci. One student said that the exhibition was spectacular as there were so many drawings that she hadn't seen before and in particular the preparatory sketches for 'The Last Supper'. A valuable and thoroughly inspiring educational trip.

With thanks to the Queen's Gallery team, the students for their wonderful maturity, the sixth form and Art team and the parents for allowing them to go. Apologies to one Year 13 students because as we were leaving he said 'But Miss, I haven't seen everything yet!'

Ms Arif, the STEM and Assistant Achievement Director for Higher Attainers who is one of our science teachers, took part in Viewing the Invisible which brings together scientists and artists to explore and celebrate the similarities in their working methods. This exciting public engagement project is a collaboration between Kings College London and London Fine Art Studios with the support of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). The National Portrait Gallery was an associate partner. Through the close study of shapes and constituent parts, scientists and artists alike seek to demystify the human form. This shared approach challenges the popularly held belief that science and art exist at polar ends of a spectrum. Viewing the Invisible showcases the ways in which both disciplines work together, exploring how scientists and artists can support each other in disseminating research and enriching creativity.

Harris students come together to tackle the Climate Emergency

The climate emergency is a growing global crisis that students across the Harris Federation can no longer ignore. They are working hard on making a positive change in their school communities.

On September 26th and 27th, students from across the Harris Federation of schools will gather at Harris Academy St John’s Wood to attend the Climate Emergency Conference, delivered by The Economist Educational Foundation.

Students will explore the issues around the climate emergency and the barriers to addressing it and will create exciting initiatives to help their schools go green.

The Climate Emergency Challenge

Across the two days, the students will be challenged to devise an emission reducing project to deliver over the course of the year in their individual schools. They'll work with their teachers, pitch to senior leadership and take responsibility for the process of creating change.

A shortlist of the most effective projects will be presented at an awards event in the summer term, where a winning project will be selected.

Some of the students who will be attending the conference include:

El Mowafaq, a Year 12 student from Harris Academy St. John’s Wood, who said:

"I am worried that climate change is not at the forefront of governments' agendas all around the world. I believe we need to act appropriately and make a change now."

Mia, a Year 10 student at Harris Academy South Norwood, who said:

“Climate change is a crisis that past generations have imposed upon us. We cannot let future generations suffer and must take action.”

Salman, a Year 12 student from Harris Academy South Norwood, who said:

“Within a matter of years sea levels will rise, habitats will be destroyed and countries as we know them will change. It is our duty to minimise the damage of climate change, as there is no doubt it is real and the crisis of our generation.”

Dill Anstey, Vice Principal of the Harris Federation Sixth Form, said:

“As educators we feel it is our responsibility to ensure that our children are not only taught about the impact we are having on our planet but are given the tools and support they need to help enact positive change.

It is hugely important that this programme is student-led. Following the exciting kick-off conference, we are running in partnership with ‘The Economist Educational Foundation’, our students will return to their schools as environmental ambassadors and will be supported to help bring their ideas to life.

We hope that this conference will prompt the start of a series of exciting initiates across our schools so that we become, wherever possible, more environmentally friendly.”

Sir Dan Moynihan, Chief Executive of the Harris Federation, said:

“We are looking forward to the start of the Harris Climate Emergency Challenge. We educate over 32,000 young people so we hope this will help engage and empower our students to make a tangible difference.”

Emily Evans, CEO of The Economist Educational Foundation, said:
“This is why we’re passionate about news literacy. Young people want to make their voices heard on climate change, an issue that could profoundly affect their future. We’re committed to giving them the knowledge and skills to understand the important issues of our time, and take action. Thoughtful conversations like this can have real impact, and I’m very excited to see the change projects the students go on to develop.”

15 very fortunate Year 7 and 8 students had a fantastic opportunity on Friday 5th July to go to Lords Cricket Ground to watch Bangladesh vs Pakistan in a Cricket World Cup group stage fixture. The opportunity was given to them through them competing for the school in a Westminster Cricket league. The day was made even more special by it being the first time in over 200 years that children were allowed into the Lords Pavilion to watch the game. We were lucky enough to be one of 14 schools that were asked to attend the game. Our students represented themselves and the school brilliantly on the day with some of them being chosen to be interviewed by both BBC London and ESPN Cricinfo. Two students; Haleemah (Year 8) and Abdullah (Year 7) were also asked to be interviewed by Daniel Norcross of Test Match Special which went on National Radio during the interval of the match. After the interview they were given a tour of the Media Centre and spoke to some famous Ex-players including former Ashes winning England Captain Michael Vaughan and legendary Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram. I would like to thank the MCC Community Cricket Coaches and Lords Cricket Ground for making this happen and giving the students this once in a lifetime opportunity.

Below are some photos of the boys picking up their awards.

The boys played well throughout the whole game maintain the lead from the start. We brought the lead to as much as 30 points. I made a few subs and put on some of our year 8s and year 9s to gain experience.

The final score was 80-69.

Jim was MVP scoring 33 pts he was outstanding and could not miss a 3 pointer.

Overall I am very proud of this team as I have coached them since year 7 and this was a well deserved win.

Nicole Year 9 and Egor Year 7 were the first students to receive their gold rewards badge during tutor time today.

Nicole and Egor have both surpassed 350 reward signatures.

In addition to their badge, the students also signed Dr. Tomlinson’s Autograph Book.

In recognition of their achievement and positive contributions to lessons and the wider school community, letters of commendation, with a surprise amazon voucher, have also been sent home for Egor and Nicole.

Both Nicole and Egor were very keen to let Liam know how proud they are to have received so many rewards. On their behalf, thank you to all colleagues who have signed planners and tutors who have kept the spreadsheet updated – the students really appreciate it.

If you see Nicole or Egor around school, please congratulate them.

On Saturday 1st of June Rowida from HASJW in Year 12 gave a lively talk combining her interest in politics history and art. A novelist and member of the programme, Lynda Waterhouse, who trains students for the project wrote her perspective:

'Rowida agreed to take part in the Teen Outset project at very short notice. Like the previous students from Harris St John's Wood (CJ, Naima and Elmo) she was full of ideas and quickly put her own individual stamp on the talk. Rowida was interested in politics and art and talked with ease and confidence about Benjamin Franklin, the French Revolution and how, like the female artist Vigee le Brun, it must feel to be an exile from your own country for many years. The object that was the closest to her heart was a fourteenth century mosque lamp from Cairo which she talked about with passion and knowledge. There were a couple of academics who had come to the talk and I was so impressed by the way Rowida responded to their questions and the insights that she gave back to them! Rowida was also fun to work with and I will never forget her joke Subway sandwich order!

My thanks to Rowida for stepping in so brilliantly to represent the school at such a prestigious event.

On Monday 3rd June, at the very beginning of the school day right after the half-term, Dr. Kress from the global Henkel company came to give an illuminating talk on the subject of his career and work experiences to around 35 students in Year 12.

Dr. Rahmyn Kress has been Chief Digital Officer at Henkel AG & Co. KGaA since March 2017. Dr. Kress served as Chief Executive Officer and President at Digiplug S.A.S. Dr. Kress joined Digiplug in January 2011. Prior to his new role at Henkel, he has been with Accenture since 2010, where he held several executive roles from being the Chief Executive Officer & President of an Accenture digital subsidiary in digital supply chain, Managing Director of Telecom, Media & Technology. He served as Managing Director of Accenture Technology Ecosystems & Ventures in Europe. He has more than 25 years of professional experience in developing and implementing digital strategies. He gained extensive international expertise across different industries. He served as Senior Vice President of Physical and Digital Supply Chain for the world’s largest music major, Universal Music Group.

He was friendly, engaging and approachable. Students were fascinated by hearing how he and his Iraqi family adapted to life in Germany. His problems with dyslexia and ADHD ensured that although he found school difficult initially, he certainly developed the ability to become determined and resilient which allowed him to seek success. He is keen to mentor young people who are interested in entrepreneurial ideas and problem-solving! The talk was followed by a substantial Q and A session.

Naturally we discussed politics but Dr. Kress prefers to think positively. He lives with his family in London.

U14 boys Basketball team had the perfect season in the Westminster League. They have played 10+ games and were undefeated all season.

The finals of the Westminster league was played on Friday 29th March where we went up against St Augustine's School.

St Augustine's gave us a scare by taking the lead early in the game but our boys showed great resilience to get back in the game and win 29-24.

Amour picked up the MVP award which was well deserved, he has had an outstanding season.

Honorable mention to the year 8 boys who have made a great contribution to the team, they were a big help and I am very proud of them.

This is the 1st time the U14 boys have won the Westminster league Championship without losing a game all season. This is an amazing achievement, the future of the basketball programme is bright.

On Monday 4th March HASJW took eight students (four year 10s and four Year 12s) to a debate competition called Frankly Speaking. The competition involved several schools from London, Croydon and Manchester. Initially students spent the morning at the historic Benjamin Franklin House Museum in Craven Street. Years 10 debated two motions, 'This house believes that decisions about children's health should be made by medical professionals and not their parents' and 'This house believes that national security should take priority over individual rights'. Simultaneously the year 12s debated 'This house believes we should support quotas for women in high government positions' and 'This house would ban strikes by those working in essential services'. There were two heats and a semi-final each with limited preparation time. The semi- final motion was the same for both year groups 'This house believes that cultural treasures should be returned to their areas of origin.'

Tyler Barrett-McClean and Ryan White were a fine team.

Mali Delargy (medal winner for runner up individual speaker)and Maria Cavalho became finalists at the American Embassy and were erudite and convincing. They proposed the motion ' This house supports the use of pesticides for food production'.

Rowida Satti and Khadija Mohamed worked so well together.

Robin Bahrami and Omonigho Umude also became excellent finalists for the Sixth Form in the American Embassy. They opposed the motion 'This house would ban the use of genetically modified pesticides'.

All the students were fantastic- forceful and presidential. They were also friendly with students from other schools and 'the Daughters of the American Revolution' museum and embassy staff and were perfect role models.

On Saturday 16h February Elmo delighted the public with his adept analysis of the Tudor portrait of the First Earl of Leicester, Robert Dudley in the sumptuous surroundings of the Wallace Collection.

Thanks to Elmo, we were appreciating the times when it was painted, we admired his sword, and examined real Tudor swords and daggers, scrutinised a Sumurai sword, and then spent time gazing at a large and beautiful Canaletto painting of Venice.

Elmo demonstrated his enthusiasm, knowledge and wit and gave a really engaging talk. He spent six weeks researching his ideas with Lynda Waterhouse as part of the Teen Outset group, funded by Mishcon de Reya.

The feedback from the public was amazing. It was gratifying to see his teachers and his proud father attend.

Year 11 student describes art to the public at the Wallace Collection

On Saturday 20th October Charles described five artefacts to eager members of the public. He was trained by novelist Lynda Waterhouse as part of the Wallace Collection's Teen Outset work. He deftly described how Georgian culture was not unlike scenes from the film 'Crazy Rich Asians' referring to a Sir Thomas Lawrence portrait of King George IV- but as well as being funny he also cleverly drew people's attention to a portrait of a young boy, one of the few diverse portraits at Hertford House.

Many people were very impressed with Charles' speaking skills, including actor Michelle Collins!

Charles has now inspired fellow students to participate.

Well done Charles!

On Tuesday 11th September, Harris St. John's Wood Art and Design students across 3 key stages welcomed Dr. Nicholas Cullinan to the lecture theatre where he described his education and how after studying Art History at the Courtauld University he became a security guard at the National Portrait Gallery.

Later he become an art historian and curator working in Bilbao, New York and Venice. He worked for some time at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art and in 2014 he co-curated an exhibition of Henri Matisse's cut-outs at the Tate Modern which was the most successful in the gallery's history.

Remembering all the paintings and photographs in detail at the NPG certainly helped in securing his role as Director! The students asked excellent questions and Nicholas was most impressed with the warm welcome, exceptional conduct and enthusiasm from Harris Academy pupils.

The National Portrait Gallery is an excellent gallery which is free to visit. He recommended the brilliant exhibition on MICHAEL JACKSON which is on until the 21st October (only £5 for students).

He played Rugby for England, went to Oxford after some years as a History teacher, developed sports programmes for Sky TV, and was a Labour MP for 15 years. He currently runs the Royal Trinity Hospice among many other pursuits and responsibilities, and despite his current studies in International Relations he found time to speak at length to our sixth formers about the history of the internet.

Students were fascinated by historical details such as Churchill's dilemma over the bombing of Coventry in World War 2 and his decision to not reveal that his team had cracked the code. Derek described how he was also involved with the Design Council which meant that he befriended Sir Tim Berners Lee ( inventor of the World Wide Web) but also the young man Jonny Ive who was discovered by Steve Jobs and designed the apple mac, the iphone and the ipad.

Year 12s asked excellent questions and Derek's natural bonhomie and enthusiasm ensured that students were gripped by his knowledge and wealth of professional experiences. Many indeed were amazed at the value of Apple shares and that Derek had perhaps sold them too early!

Is closed circuit TV (CCTV) a threat to our freedom?

The students were very professional and worked hard on both challenges (Salters and University). There were 23 other schools, more than in smaller festivals in other parts of the country - making their chances of winning lower. In the University Challenge they had to alter the conditions of a reaction to make it occur in 60 seconds. They were one of two teams who managed to get exactly 60 seconds and won on the basis of their write up!

Please congratulate the students when you see them, this is a fantastic achievement.

On 16th April I went to University College London (UCL) to take part in the annual Salters’ Festival of Chemistry, with 3 other students. It was their 100 year anniversary.

We took part in two challenges: the Salters’ Challenge - which was using different science skills like chromatography to find out who was the person who stole the trophy; and the University challenge - which was using our knowledge to help make a reaction take place in exactly 60 seconds. It was a close call as us and another school got exactly 60 seconds but we won as we wrote a great report.

It felt great to win and i was over the moon that day. At the end we experienced a great demonstration lecture and the lecturer made ice cream using frozen nitrogen! We all got a cup to eat, which we enjoyed with our winnings!

On Friday 16th March, eight slightly nervous Year 11 students went to the brand new and very impressive Europe Headquarters of Bloomberg to participate in debates on topics such as 'This house believes that exercise should be mandatory for 6-16 year olds' and 'This house would ban single use plastics'.

The students were impeccably behaved and enjoyed meeting staff and students from Coventry, Ilford and indeed from all over the world due to their school being a private international institution.

They also met historians, members of the American Embassy, and a rather imposing group of women called 'Daughters of the American Revolution' who all claim direct lineage with the founding fathers of the American Constitution.

The students are congratulated for their intuition and powers of speech, they were particularly well- prepared and brought copious notes. Two students retained their composure and were really cogent and passionate in the semi-finals on the debate motion they proposed which was that 'This house believes that university fees should be scrapped'.

The students were really enthusiastic and well prepared, despite their initial nerves, and gave some very insightful answers to tough questions.

The team from HSBC were fantastic. They were very vocal about how impressed they were with the school and the students. Some lived in the local area and were very surprised by what they saw here today.

Some of the comments from the HSBC team:

Students were wonderful and mature, some gave answers that would have got them a real job!
Students were confident and talked about their futures with a clear vision.
Students talked about a wide range of interests that were supported at school – a real sense that drama, music and academic interests are catered for.
One volunteer, who had researched the school and the OFSTED report, was very complementary and expressed how surprised he was about the perfect student behaviour he saw today.
All were surprised with the facilities on offer (and the school dinners!)

It was lovely to hear how impressed they were with the school – year 10 represented the Academy extremely well.

Visit from Artist Jeremy Deller

On Thursday 8th February Jeremy Deller the Turner Prize winning artist who recently represented Great Britain at the Venice Biennale came to give a talk to art and politics students from years 9 to 13. Jeremy spoke with passion and humour about his school experiences of art education, his views of privilege, politics , war and his loathing of range rovers. He showed examples of his thought-provoking work and introduced our young people to Sheena Patel, a young director at Eastenders who went to art School whilst Jeremy did not.

Jeremy did though complete work experience with Andy Warhol in New York. The students asked such great and pertinent questions such as why Jeremy fell out with his art teacher ( he focused excessively on drawing) and how successful his touring show was in America where he exhibited a bombed car with individual personnel from opposite sides of the conflict. Clearly he was inspired by Andy Warhol as a young man. Evidently our students were equally inspired since the Q and A lasted 45 minutes. My thanks go to the staff who supported me with the organisation of this visit, Speakers for Schools, and our vibrant and accomplished guests. And also to the students for their warmth and enthusiasm.

Harris Academy St Johns Wood were delighted to welcome young people from North and West London to a Panathlon Challenge Multi-Sports event. The Panathlon Challenge seeks to inspire young disabled people to use competitive sport and fair play as a means of social and personal development. Last year over 10,000 young disabled people in different sports with a range of abilities competed in various locations around the country and we were honoured to host such an event here at Harris Academy.

The day involved the young people contesting in a range of events including Boccia, Polybat, New Age Kurling, Powerchair Slalom, Table Cricket and Track & Field Athletics. There was an abundance of effort and enthusiasm throughout the day, highlights included some excellent batting in the Table-Top Cricket event, very competitive rallies in the Polybat gameplay and the finishing relay races had the crowd roaring as they willed their teams to win! A special mention needs to also go to Harris Academy’s Mohamed Abdulkarim (Year 11) who achieved the fastest time of the day in the Powerchair Slalom event – Well done Mo!!

Ensuring the event ran successfully on the day were Harris Academy’s Young Leaders. The young leaders performed brilliantly to make sure all the competitors were encouraged and felt comfortable at all times. The Young Leaders are prefects here at our school and their personable, pro-active and hard-working approach to the Panathlon event made sure a fantastic time was had by all!

Well done to everyone involved.

He was praised by Francesca Wilson, an organiser from Roche Court, Francesca Wilson, who said on how the adjudicator from the Victoria and Albert Museum Antonia Boström 'commented on how clearly he showed his interest in the specific attention to detail and how good his discussion was in showing how the work reflects the time it was made in.

Well done to all involved.

Harris success in new league table of academy trusts

The Department for Education has published a table comparing the performance of multi-academy trusts, including the Harris Federation.

We are pleased to say that Harris performed exceptionally well at primary and at secondary.

At primary, the table was based on the Key Stage 2 tests from last summer. Children at Harris did very well. Out of 95 multi-academy trusts included in the research, Harris was one of only six where the progress of children was ‘significantly above average’ in all three areas that are tested: reading, writing and maths.

At secondary level, the Department for Education used a new measure called Progress 8, which calculates the progress made by students in eight key subjects. The Harris score was third highest on the list, out of 47 multi-academy trusts included in the research.

Credit for these results goes to the pupils at Harris schools, their teachers and of course all parents who have encouraged and supported their children so well. Congratulations to everybody involved.

Harris academies are widely recognised for the consistently high standard of education they provide.

The majority of Harris academies inspected by Ofsted are ‘outstanding’ and the others are all ‘good’:

19 of our inspected academies are ‘outstanding’ and 10 are ‘good’.
Our academies are three times more likely to be ‘outstanding’ than schools nationally.
Of 20 academies that joined us because they had previously been considered to be failing, 12 have become ‘outstanding’ and the other eight are ‘good’.

In their 2016 performance measures for Multi Academy Trusts (MATs), the Department for Education said that:

At secondary, our Progress 8 score was the third highest of any MAT, with the trusts in first and second place running just five and three academies each (compared to 16 Harris academies considered by DfE analysts).
Our primary academies were ‘significantly above average’ in all three performance measures: we are one of just six out of 95 MATs to have achieved this.

Closing the gap between groups of pupils is part of the core mission of the Harris Federation:

Consecutive reports by academic researchers at social mobility charity the Sutton Trust have concluded that we are among the top academy trusts for improving the prospects of disadvantaged pupils.
Nationally, Progress 8 for disadvantaged pupils was -0.38 in 2016. This compares with +0.41 at Harris, showing that our disadvantaged pupils achieved more than a grade higher in six of their GCSEs than they would have done on average elsewhere.
Lower ability pupils are five times more likely to achieve the English Baccalaureate with the Harris Federation than they are nationally.
Not only do disadvantaged children in Harris primary academies outperform disadvantaged children nationally, they also outperform non-disadvantaged children: 64% of our Year 6 pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds met expected standards in reading, writing and maths in 2016. This compares to 60% of all non-disadvantaged children in the country and just 39% of disadvantaged children.

Of 11 Harris primary academies with Key Stage 2 results in 2016, eight had been placed in Ofsted failure categories before joining our Federation. But:

Every Harris primary academy outperformed its local authority average for the percentage of pupils meeting expected standards in reading, writing and maths.
71% of Harris primary children met expected standards overall (this compares to a national average of 53%).

In 2016, all 17 Harris secondary academies achieved positive Progress 8 scores:

Progress 8 at Harris was +0.46, compared to the national average of -0.03. Put into context, this means that every Harris pupil achieved about a grade higher in four GCSEs than they would have done on average elsewhere.
Locally, Harris academies topped the Progress 8 league tables in five of the nine boroughs we had schools in.
Four Harris academies were in the top 1% of schools nationally.
Progress 8 at Harris Academy Battersea was 1.14, the highest of any school in London and the fourth highest in the country.

Harris secondary pupils are achieving success based on a core curriculum of academic subjects:

In 2010, the average English Baccalaureate score for the secondary schools (including predecessor schools) that now make up the Harris Federation was just 7%. This was five times higher in 2016, at 35%. The national average is 23%.
15% of Harris sixth formers won places at Russell Group universities in 2016. Increasing numbers are also winning places on the most competitive apprenticeship programmes: last summer, these included KPMG and Bain.
At Harris Westminster, 23 sixth formers – 10% of the year group sitting A Levels in summer 2017 –have received offers to study at Oxford and Cambridge.
