Access to external providers & speakers
Harris Academy St. John’s Wood Provider Access Policy
This policy statement sets out HASJW’s arrangements for managing the access of providers to pupils at the school for the purpose of giving them information about the provider’s education or training offer. This complies with the school’s legal obligations under Section 42B of the Education Act 1997.
All pupils in years 8-13 are entitled:
- to find out about technical education qualifications and apprenticeships opportunities, as part of a careers programme which provides information on the full range of education and training options available at each transition point;
- to hear from a range of local providers about the opportunities they offer, including technical education and apprenticeships – through options events, assemblies and group discussions and taster events;
- to understand how to make applications for the full range of academic and technical courses.
For Parents and Carers
- To be fully involved by supporting the Academy in its development of the CEG curriculum. Parents will be expected to take an active part in the CEG delivery whether it be through home-based discussions, actively working with students on career planning tasks and even working with the Academy though providing local support in the form of guest speakers.
For Teachers and Tutors
- Deliver the CEG unit as organized by the teacher in charge of careers, ensuring that they deliver the units in a motivating and stimulating way that encourages their tutees to become self-aware and to explore their career development and career management;
- Ensure that they support the delivery of the CEG that is relevant to their own subject area’s programmes of study and schemes of work. This will primarily be achieved through the enterprise contracted unit of work which will develop enterprise and employability skills;
- To act as role models for students in developing the Science like and enterprising attitudes that will act as the foundation stones for motivating students to be lifelong learners.

Here you will find a free CPD course which is designed to provide foundational knowledge for Careers Leaders and those interested in the role.
This free course comprises of five modules that each take approximately two hours to complete.
By the end of the course, you will have:
- Outlined a career guidance development plan that supports the school or college to achieve the Gatsby Benchmarks.
- Identified how you will lead others to deliver, refine and quality assure the career guidance development plan.
- Outlined a plan to manage your own development as a Careers Leader.

Opportunities for access
A number of events, integrated into the school careers programme, will offer providers the opportunity to visit our school to speak to pupils and/or their parents/carers, these are detailed in our online careers plan. We believe in a robust careers programme broadly accessible to all our year groups with key features for careers engagement:
- HASJW Guru Lecture Programme (Year 12)
- Enrichment Days which incorporate careers curriculum at all key stages
- Future First Alumni Network events
- London Business School Guru Lecture Programme
- Compulsory Work Experience in Year 10 and Year 12
- The Career Ready internship and mentoring programme
- Future Frontiers careers support programme in year 10
- Business in the Community network support
- Pathways CTM careers support and guidance
- Careers and Enterprise network support
- Making the Leap mock interviews and careers seminars
- As well as a range of bespoke assemblies and careers presentations.
We are particularly keen to provide the highest quality work experience and internship opportunities to our students and this is an area of great need. Please speak to our Careers Leader to identify the most suitable opportunity for you to support our school.
We have focused opportunities targeted at STEM and High Achieving students with bespoke programmes which you may also wish to consider supporting.
Premises and facilities
We have outstanding presentation facilities including a large auditorium for year groups of 200 or more, a lecture theatre seating 90 as well as fully equipped classrooms and conferencing facilities (with interactive smartboard technology) which can be booked for suitable opportunities. Please feel free to contact us directly to discuss further you requirements for events which you have in mind.
Providers are welcome to leave a copy of their prospectus or other relevant course literature with our Careers team at the HASJW resource Hub which is regularly updated and is accessible to all students throughout the school day and for after school activities.
All students have email access and we are willing to send opportunities to targeted students. We have mailing lists for year groups and students who have shown an interest in particular industries or sectors for a targeted approach.
