Physical Education

We aim to follow the National Curriculum Physical Education Programme of Study in both Key Stage 3 and 4.

The national curriculum for Physical Education aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities

  • are physically active for sustained periods of time

  • engage in competitive sports and activities

  • lead healthy, active lives.

Principles

We teach Physical Education using the principles of ‘SPAFC’ as below:

  • Sportspersonship - Developing appreciation for teamwork, fair play, and the need for a positive can-do attitude.
  • Performance - Developing an understanding of a variety of different skills/techniques to encourage and promote participation in a broad range of activities and develop a lifelong love of sports participation and exercise.
  • Anatomy - Developing an understanding of structures within the body and how they work together to produce movement.
  • Fitness for Sport - Discussing how different sports require different types of fitness to be successful and lead healthy lifestyles.
  • Character - Developing an ability to show and enhance resilience and competitiveness through sport/exercise.

Key Stage 3 content

At KS3, students study a diverse practical curriculum that introduces them to activities that they have not participated in before, as well as building on skills and tactics within familiar games. Students will study 8 different activities in Year 7, 6 Sports in Year 8 and 4 sports in Year 9. This is to give the students a taste of a wide variety of activities but then filter down throughout KS3 so that they have a deeper understanding of the activities they will cover in Year 9 preparing them for the CNAT course we offer at level 2 in KS4.

Year 7 Activities:

  • Volleyball

  • Fitness

  • Badminton

  • Handball

  • Tag Rugby

  • Basketball

  • Athletics

  • Cricket / Striking and Fielding

Year 8 Activities:

  • Fitness

  • Basketball

  • Handball

  • Athletics

  • Cricket / Striking and Fielding

Year 9 Activities:

  • Volleyball

  • Basketball

  • Football

  • Athletics

  • Cricket / Striking and Fielding

Theory content is woven into practical lessons where students are expected to learn the major muscles of the body (Year 7), how to stretch the major muscles of the body (Year 8) and the types of movements that major muscles can cause (Year 9).

Key Stage 4 content

At KS4, all students have a 1-hour Core PE lesson each week.

Students are given the option to participate in broad range of activities throughout the key stage to maximise participation, including:

Basketball, Badminton, Football, Table Tennis, Athletics, Cricket, Dodgeball, Dance Fitness

CNAT Sports Studies Specification.pdf

Key Stage 4 students who choose PE as an option study the Cambridge National Level 2 in Sports Studies. OCR | J829 | Cambridge National Sports Studies Level 2 (Year 10/11)

  • Exam unit 1 paper – Unit R184 Contemporary issues in Sport
  • Two coursework units, both internally marked and moderated by OCR:
    • Unit R185 Performance and leadership in sports activities
    • Unit R186 Sport and the media

Students develop skills that will help them throughout their other subjects and into their post-16 studies and beyond such as leadership, analysis and evaluation.

Key Stage 5 content

OCR | 5827 | CTEC Extended Certificate in Sport and Physical Activity Level 3 (Year 12/13)

Practical and theory lessons are combined in a qualification that is the equivalent of 1 A level. This course introduces students to body systems and the effect of physical activity, sports psychology and sports injuries. In addition, students are able to build upon previous knowledge from KS4 and develop their depth of knowledge within the following topics: sports organisation and sports coaching.
